Bellatrix was born into a long-established family of pureblood wizards. Attended Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry and studied at Slytherin House. After graduation, she married Rodolphus Lestrange and became a member of the Death Eaters. After Voldemort's defeat in the First Wizarding War in 1981, Bellatrix was arrested and imprisoned in Azkaban, but she managed to escape from prison in 1996 and rejoined Voldemort's cause. She then became a loyal servant of Voldemort, participating in the Division of Mysteries battle and killing her cousin Sirius Black. After the Harry Potter trio is captured searching for Horcruxes, Bellatrix tortures and interrogates Hermione with a heart-drilling spell, and then kills Dobby as the group flees. During the duel at Hogwarts, Bellatrix nearly kills Ginny and taunts her, drawing the ire of Ginny's mother, Molly, who is struck in the chest with a lethal spell and dies.
